Frequently Asked Questions

Security

  • No. There are several layers of security between the base station and an individual modem including beam forming RF technology, encryption and authentication.

  • All computers on the Internet are exposed to dangers such as viruses and worms. This is the case regardless of whether you connect to the internet using ADSL, cable or the Unwired service. There are a number of important steps you should take to protect your computer:

    1. If you are running Windows, make sure you regularly update your computer with the latest Critical Update patches from Microsoft.
    2. Install anti-virus software on your PC and make sure you keep it regularly up-to-date with the latest virus information (This feature is built in to most anti-virus software).
    3. Purchase a firewall for your computer. We recommend that you purchase a software based firewall solution to run on your computer. If your have a home/office network you should purchase a hardware based firewall to run on your networking equipment in order to protect all of your computers.

In addition, when you are on the internet you should be very careful about downloading and installing/running programs on your PC unless you are confident that they are from a responsible source. You should also be careful when opening emails from people you do not know or who have no reason to email you. It may be better to delete these emails without opening them.

We recommend you visit our internet security section here for more information and tips on internet security.

  • The Unwired network uses built-in security mechanisms to minimise the possibility of security breaks from within the network. These mechanisms include the use of proprietary air interfaces between Unwired's base stations and customer modems, beam pointing technology to direct signals to the location where customer modems are placed, traffic broadcast filters and authentication technology.

Visit our internet security section here for more information on wireless security.

  • It is always recommended that any computer or network that is connected to the internet should take security precautions. This is even more important for 'always on' connections. A firewall is the most comprehensive way to protect your network or computer. Firewalls operate between your computer and the internet by inspecting data before it is accepted. There are many different firewalls available and even the most basic ones make it much more difficult to access data on your computer. You can purchase firewall software from any large computer retail store.

Visit our internet security section here for more information on firewalls.

  • No, your machine is no more accessible to other Unwired wireless internet users than it is to any internet users. Unwired Wireless Broadband and Fast Internet are as secure as any cable, wire-based broadband or dial-up service.

  • There are many types of wireless networks and each of them has its own mechanism for dealing with security. You may find that general statements regarding wireless network security are referring to the 802.11-family of products. The Unwired network does not use the 802.11-family of protocols and is just as secure as any cable, dial-up or wire-based broadband service.
